ATTEND THE SCHOOL LEADERSHIP TEAM (SLT) MEETING! 
 
The next meeting is Thursday, November 16, 2017 at 8 a.m. in the library/media center.  
The school leadership team is comprised of school administration, teachers and parents from HMM.  It's primary function is to facilitate in the development of the school improvement plan, monitor and assess the implementation of that plan, and make amendments as necessary.  The team will help to advance policies and procedures that will enhance achievement and meet educational, safety, and parent involvement goals. Lastly, the group will support decision making efforts by the school and assist in the communication thereof.  If you are not sure if your child's classroom has a volunteer, please check with your child's teacher. The school offers childcare in the computer lab during the meeting so that parents may attend.

ALL PARENTS ARE WELCOME AND ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND! If you have questions, concerns, suggestions that you would like to address with the HMM staff and administration, these meetings are your opportunity to do that.  If you would like to add an item to the agenda for discussion for one of the meetings, please contact Beth Leo at beth.leo@cms.k12.nc.us.  Each classroom also has a room parent as well if you would like to contact them regarding issues about the classroom.

This event is for all CMS Montessori Upper Elementary students.  Not only is it a great introduction to some of the components of Secondary Montessori on our new campus, it is also a great way to meet new and old friends from the Montessori community.  In addition, you will be supporting the Secondary Montessori students as they work as camp counselors to earn funding for their school community.

MASS HEARING SCREENING INFORMATION:
All Pre-K, K and 1st grade students and students new to CMS will have a hearing screening performed by the school’s Speech-Language Pathologist unless the school is notified in writing by September 25th.   If a student does not pass the hearing screening after three attempts, a “Consent for Hearing Evaluation” permission form will be sent to the parent to proceed with a hearing evaluation at school.
 
Parents of students being monitored for history of hearing loss should be aware that they will also receive this consent form. Without signed permission, students will not receive a hearing evaluation by the school’s Audiologist.

FALL FESTIVAL AT HMM NOVEMBER 5TH!!!!!!

The anticipation in this house for tomorrow night is high.....as I am sure it is in all yours! We have taken this opportunity to discuss safety and politeness not only from ourselves as individuals but the effect these have on our community and the interactions we have. This year we’re doing something a little differently at Highland Mill Montessori.  Each year the PTA has a 2 week fundraising campaign where we sell items – cookie dough, flower bulbs, team cups, etc.  This year we are conducting a direct giving campaign instead of fundraising through the sale of items. Yes, you read that correctly - NO SELLING!!  In addition to no selling, this means that EVERY DOLLAR stays at HMM!  In order to really get things going and to raise the funds we truly need to support our school, we’re kicking off our 2 week direct giving BLITZ starting on Monday, October 17th!

  1. Individual prizes for each child whose family contributes to our campaign
  2. Grade level prizes for the classroom from each grade level that has the MOST PARTICIPATION
  3. A school-wide celebration if we REACH OUR GOAL of $8000

AUTOBELL FUNDRAISER STARTS THIS WEEK!!!
Just in time for the holidays, the HMM PTA is sponsoring a fundraiser selling full-service car wash tickets from Autobell! The sale will run from Nov 3rd-18th and the PTA will keep half of each ticket sold. Tickets are $16.99 each and include interior and exterior cleaning. All tickets will be distributed before Winter Break, so make your list of riends and family to purchase tickets for and keep an eye out for more information in your child's Thursday folder later this week.  

 
November 22nd JumpJam at Defy Gravity--Tickets go on sale this week
Our next HMM Spirit Night will be Tuesday, 11/22 at DefyGravity Charlotte (8116 University City Blvd) from 6-7pm. Tickets for the JumpJam event are limited, must be purchased in advance and will be on sale starting this week through Monday, 11/14.  The cost for each one hour ticket is $13 for ages 7 years and older and $9 for children 6 years and under, with half of all ticket sales being donated back to HMM.  It's going to be a bouncing good time and a great way to jumpstart the Thanksgiving Holiday, so mark your calendar and plan to attend!  More information and details on ticket sales will be included in this week's Thursday folder.


Secondary Montessori News
 

There is a lot of exciting news from the CMS Secondary Montessori Program this week!  Hopefully by now you have all heard that CMS has proposed expanding our Secondary Montessori Program to 12th grade by one grade per year.  (This was the expectation when the 9th grade was approved last year, but this proposal will make it official.) Secondary Montessori will also move to a location dedicated to our program – no more sharing space!  The final step is the board vote on November 9th. The Secondary Montessori program is growing and welcoming new staff members.  Read hereabout the newest additions to the team (and maybe see a familiar face!)

Upper el students invited to Sedgefield Montessori Kids Camp on teacher workdays – October 31 and November 8  The 7th, 8th, and 9th graders will host Upper El students on two upcoming teacher workdays.  This day of creativity and fun costs $45 for the day, and will be lead by Secondary Montessori students and overseen by Sedgefield Montessori parents. OCTOBER 31st CAMP HAS BEEN CANCELED!

Come learn more about the Secondary Montessori Program at our Open House Events – November 10th and January 26th.   The Open House events will showcase the current secondary program – 7th through 9th grades. They will be held in the Sedgefield Middle School Media Center from 6pm to 7:30pm on Thursday, November 10, 2016 and Thursday, January 26, 2017.

Watching all the students come back together and see all their friends and their teachers. It was great for me as a parent to see all my "school friends" and reconnect. THIS THURSDAY: SEPTEMBER 8th at 6:00 PM
It is imperative that parents attend the HMM School wide PTA meeting and Curriculum night. A brief PTA meeting will be held and parents are urged to attend. You will be able to learn about your PTA and the many chances you can have to IMPACT your school (in the classroom and out). After that, you will be able to visit your child's classroom and chat with teachers and staff! Please plan to join us!

Hart’s Soda Shop at Thursday’s Curriculum Night – a sweet way to #impactHMM

Parent’s Night Out at Free Range Brewing 

Join us Saturday,Sept. 24th from 6-9pm at Free Range Brewing, located at 2320 N. If you are interested in making an IMPACT at HMM and in children's lives here is the perfect opportunity!
★ Advocacy: Promote programs to further the goals and purposes of the PTA. Using our social
media outlets, educate families and caregivers on important issues related to health and educational
success for their children.
★ Audit : Responsible for the audits and financial reviews for the PTA. This includes a monthly and
yearly review of PTA bank statements and supporting documents.
★ Book Fair : Organize, setup and hold the Winter and Spring Book Fairs. This is a week long
commitment twice a year – December and April.
★ Communications : A standing committee that communicates all PTA and HMM news, events and
activities to families, teachers and staff. This committee creates a weekly ebulletin,
monthly calendar,
newsletter and bulletin board, and updates Facebook with all important information.
★ Fall Festival: A committee that organizes, plans and executes the annual HMM Fall Festival. This
is a onetime
commitment.
★ Family Spirit Nights: Plan and coordinate “Family Nights” at various venues for our families to
enjoy time together outside of the school environment. This committee is ongoing throughout the
school year.
★ Garden : Work with the teachers and staff to create a plan of action to coordinate the care and
maintenance of the gardens hold a Fall and Spring Gardening Day for our families. This committee is
ongoing throughout the school year.
★ Nominating : Works throughout the year to identify talented, motivated and responsible individuals
to serve as officers of the PTA. This involves preparing a slate of nominated individuals to run for
elected office of the PTA for the upcoming school year and conducting the election at the last PTA
General Assembly meeting of the current school year.
★ Room Parent Liaison: Point of contact between Room Parents and the PTA. Communicates
information to Room Parents from the PTA regarding news, events and activities where classroom and
parent involvement is needed.
★ Special Events: Work within a committee to plan, coordinate and execute Special Events
sponsored by the PTA that are held throughout the year. These events include Grandparents Day,
Doughnuts with Dad, Muffins with Mom, and Teacher Appreciation Week.
★ Spirit Wear: A committee that coordinates the sale of school spirit merchandise throughout the
school year. This involves ordering, selling and distributing school tshirts
and car magnets.
Merchandise is available for sale at Open House, Back to School Night and Fall Festival as well as via
preorder
sales at designated times during the school year.
★ Thursday Folders: A committee that collects all materials to be distributed in weekly Thursday
folders. This includes making copies and distributing materials to classrooms by Wednesday afternoon
of each week. You must have the flexibility and availability to be at school during the day for at least an
hour on Wednesday each week.
★ Webmaster: Maintains and updates the HMM PTA website. Works closely with the
Communications Chair to ensure that all information is current and available to families, teachers and
staff in a timely manner.

Spirit Rock Info
HMM has two Spirit Rocks available for painting! If you'd like to paint the Spirit Rock, you must first check to see if the date is available on the Spirit Rock calendar here. If your date is available, then please fill out this form and send in $10 to HMM PTA. Once the money is received, the PTA will reserve the date on the calendar. Can’t wait to see all your beautiful Spirit Rock creations!
