So it's the last week of school.... Time for summer fun to begin soon: camps, trips and exploring! In all the summer bustle, don't forget to take the time out for Montessori learning, reading and those moments that can be utilized to teach even the simplest of lessons! Stay Safe and HAVE FUN! Parents of 6th grade students attending Sedgefield Montessori next year –

Students at Sedgefield Montessori (and Sedgefield Middle School) are NOT REQUIRED TO WEAR UNIFORMS NEXT YEAR, so plan accordingly.  All students must follow the CMS dress code regarding what is appropriate school attire. 

As always, Sedgefield Montessori t-shirts are a GREAT option and can be purchased & worn every day! The change in uniform policy does NOT apply to students who are staying at HMM next year – just those moving up to Sedgefield Montessori.

End of Grade testing is this week! Please encourage your children to practice good habits: Go to bed early and get plenty of rest, eat a good balanced breakfast and just try their best! These are skills that they will be able to draw on their entire lives....start them now!

As school is coming to an end, don't forget to thank all the HMM teachers and administrators for all they have done this year! It wasn't easy but this has truly been a great year for all!
Congratulations Science Olympiad.
​Both the JV and Varsity Teams worked very hard this past Saturday at the Science Olympiad competition and it showed! We placed in numerous events and brought home a total of 11 medals! WAY TO GO TEAMS! We are so proud of all the hard work and comradery that was shown!

June 9th (the last day of school) is coming fast. As the parent of a Pre-K and a 6th grader, I am not so sure I am happy for this year to end. All of our kids are growing up....too fast for me! At the beginning of the year they were younger and timid.....and now they have matured and blossomed in their own ways. By the time we come back in the fall, they will be even more so. Because of this, as a parent, I take the time to remember the minutes and seconds that make these days. I store them in my memory so that when I feel like things are happening too quickly I take a minute to sit and remember these times. I encourage you to do the same. Revel in the minutes and seconds....remember these days...because when you turn around, they will be gone and our "babies" will be paving their own way in this great world of ours.

Join the SLT at their monthly meetings every 3rd Thursday at 8:00 am. The group gets together and discusses student/school decisions that are important to not only the school but our students as well. First and foremost- HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to all that play a motherly part in raising a child! Today is the day to celebrate you!

This week is also the week to celebrate and appreciate our teachers and staff. Below is a schedule for different ways to show appreciation each day. If you have not, and are able, please speak with your room parent to sign up to cover lunch on Friday so that a teacher can enjoy their appreciation lunch. Any and all time you can give is very much appreciated! Let us all join together to show our teachers how we feel and how truly thankful we are.

HMM Book Fair
The Book Fair is coming! The Book Fair is coming! Below are some important dates to remember to make sure your student is stocked up for a summer of great reading!
          * Thursday May 5th: Book Fair Set Up: any and all time that you could come help would be appreciated!
          * Friday May 6th: Student preview/wish list day
          * Monday May 9th-May 13th: Book Fair is open for sales! open daily 8:45-5:00pm (we will be open late for the Spring Concert!)
          * Friday May 13th- Book Fair break down: open in AM and breakdown in afternoon

HMM Teacher Appreciation Week - May 9th - May 13th
Let's show our teachers and staff some love!  Please join us in honoring them with the following daily recognitions during HMM Teacher Appreciation Week:

• MONDAY (May 9): Paper Gifts – notecards, books, journals, magazines, stationery, adult coloring books, etc.
• TUESDAY (May 10): Favorite Treats - sweet, salty, healthy, whatever they like to eat
• WEDNESDAY (May 11): Specials Day – each class will be assigned a Specials teacher to shower with treats
• THURSDAY (May 12): Gift Cards
• FRIDAY (May 13): Heartfelt Gifts – student’s choice

The PTA will also be hosting a catered lunch for all teachers on Friday, May 13th from 11 am – 1pm.  We will need parent volunteers to be IN THE CLASSROOMS during that time.  Please email your child’s teacher or your room parent today if you are available to help.

“Night of the Arts”
May 12, 2016 from 6:00-7:30. The HMM Band will perform several selections, and then there will be an opportunity to visit with Mr. Byers and Ms. Joni to learn about the great things that are happening in Technology and Art this year. Finally, all of the students will perform in a spring musical called “Americans All.” This special night will have something for everyone, so please make plans to attend!

First, I would like to apologize for the tardiness of this newsletter. Due to technical difficulty (ie.- my computer already thinks its summer vacation) the Sunday newsletter is coming to you Monday night! With that said, the school year is winding down and my computer isn't the only thing ready for the summer break! Please remind your students that school is still in session and there is plenty of work to be done! Stay focused- the summer will be here soon enough!


Yearbooks on sale NOW! ALL ORDERS DUE MAY 6th!

• All yearbooks MUST be pre ordered online via the Picaboo website:

• The cost of each yearbook is $15. EXTRA yearbooks will NOT be available, so be sure to PRE-ORDER to reserve your copy. Yearbooks will be delivered to classrooms & sent home in backpacks during the last week of the school year. Please email [email protected] with any questions.

Yearbook Dedications: DEADLINE EXTENDED: ALL DEDICATIONS DUE MAY 6th!
A yearbook dedication is a photo and short message of love and support from families to their HMM student. This is a sweet way to give your child a little shout out to commemorate a fantastic school year! (see the bottom of the email for additional information) Dedications are ONLY $5.00 and must be received by May 6th to be in the HMM yearbook.
DON'T FORGET:  Muffins with Mom is THIS Friday, May 6th.  Dads, we  need your help!

HMM Transition Meeting
On May 6th at 9:15am (right after Muffins with Moms), join staff for our HMM Transitional Meeting. This meeting will explore each level and the changes to expect, what you can do to ease your student's transition from one level to the next, etc. Staff will be available to answer any questions you may have. All parents are welcome! You do not need to have a child in a transition year for this to be beneficial! We hope to see you there!

SEDGEFIELD NAMED A MAGNET SCHOOL OF DISTINCTION
We are honored to announce that Magnet Schools of America named  Sedgefield Montessori as a 2016 public “Magnet School of Distinction.” We are one of 258 schools/programs recognized for commitment to high academic standards, school diversity, specialized curricula and instruction, family engagement, and community partnerships.
          Said MSA Executive Director, Todd Mann,“This is a way for our association to recognize the most accomplished magnet schools in the country. These schools are making a lasting, positive impact on the lives of children. Muffins with Mom is May 6th.  Dads, we  need your help!
Our annual Muffins with Mom is coming up on Friday, May 6th from 8-9am.  Moms, grab the kids and join us for muffins and other breakfast treats as we kick of Mother's Day weekend!  Please see the flier that came home in last Thursday's folder and return your RSVP as soon as possible so we can plan accordingly.  And DADS, we need your help to make this event a success.  We're looking for male/dad volunteers to help serve food and manage a very easy craftivity we'll have for the kids to do for mom.  Your help is important to ensure that all our moms can actually enjoy their morning with the kids!  If available to volunteer for any or all  of the morning of May 6th, please email [email protected] and someone will be in touch. 

“Night of the Arts”
May 12, 2016 from 6:00-7:30. The HMM Band will perform several selections, and then there will be an opportunity to visit with Mr. Byers and Ms. Joni to learn about the great things that are happening in Technology and Art this year. Finally, all of the students will perform in a spring musical called “Americans All.” This special night will have something for everyone, so please make plans to attend!

Field Day
On  May 3rd at 10:00am-3:45 pm students will get to experience a good old fashioned field day! A complete schedule and list of events will come out in next Thursday’s folders as well as who to contact if you are interested in volunteering. STAY TUNED!
 
HMM Transition Meeting
On May 6th at 9:15am (right after Muffins with Moms), join staff for our HMM Transitional Meeting. This meeting will explore each level and the changes to expect, what you can do to ease your student's transition from one level to the next, etc. Staff will be available to answer any questions you may have. All parents are welcome! You do not need to have a child in a transition year for this to be beneficial! We hope to see you there!

The first week back from Spring Break- time to get back into the swing of things and remember what "normal" is. Who can believe that it was only a week that we had away?!? Now starts the final descent of the school year.....however, this does not mean that we can relax. There are projects to be done, tests to be taken and lessons to continue learning. PLEASE SIGN - PETITION for NC Montessori Teacher Licensing Issues
Montessori teachers in the state of NC are having tremendous difficulty getting state licensure. There are teachers at all of the CMS Montessori primary schools (including Highland Mill Montessori) currently facing this issue who may lose their jobs if the state does not change the way they are licensing Montessori teachers. CMS has 4 Montessori schools in Mecklenburg County; these schools all need to be staffed with credentialed Montessori teachers in order to protect to the philosophy. Unfortunately, CMS and the State of North Carolina are not willing to recognize and license Montessori educated teachers to teach in our Montessori schools. Montessori Association of North Carolina (MANC) has made some progress with the Department of Child Development and Early Education. They plan to present to the dilemma facing these teachers to State Board of Education this dilemma. It would be great if we could present a unified front of parents, public Montessori Teachers, and advocacy members to the board. We as a community need to let our State Board of Education know that we value our public Montessori schools and are requesting that they acknowledge and protect our current program.

HMM PTA Advocacy Team
Testing.. It' might not be anyone's favorite subject - Families, Students, and Teachers alike : ) As part of CMS, Highland Mill Montessori participates in state required tests throughout the school year and our Teachers are certainly well versed and equipped for the various testing programs, One of those programs is the state's reading proficiency initiative entitled: READ TO ACHIEVE 

As many of you may be aware this initiative was implemented following the state board of education's determination that ALL students should be able to read at or above grade level by the end of their 3rd grade year.  The state board of education has implemented the Read to Achieve assessment program to help ensure that the reading proficiency of all 3rd grade students is measured during the school year.  There are benchmarks and pathways within the Read to Achieve assessment process that  allow for the determination of proficient or not proficient.  Since the initial implementation of Read to Achieve students at HMM have consistently faired very well on the assessment.  Our awesome Literacy team lead by Ms. Beth held a very helpful information session r last month to help Families gain an understanding of the Read to Achieve process.  In case you were unable to attend that info-session; here are a couple links that may help shed some light on the process and what to expect (even if you don't yet have a 3rd grader).

This week is the short week before Spring Break. My how the year is flying by! I have seen such growth in not only my children but other HMM students as well. It makes me not only very proud to be part of the HMM community but grateful that our students are able to receive this unique experience that they are exposed to and taught through every day.

CONGRATS MIDDLE AND UPPER EL STUDENTS!!!
Middle El and Upper El students came in seventh in the CMS district-wide Jeremy Lin Reading Challenge. The reading challenge focused on reading non-fiction news articles about anti-bullying on the Newsela website. Students read news articles on their reading level, then took quizzes to earn points. Our students earned 350 points, which placed them seventh out of 50 participating CMS schools. Great job!!!!!

Let Me Run- CANCELED
Due to a number of scheduling issues and lack of enrollment, we have had to cancel Let Me Run for the Spring 2016. It was not an easy decision to make, but it was best for everyone involved. We will have a team again beginning in the Fall 2016.

PRESENTORS NEEDED FOR THE MONTESSORI COLLECTIVE'S CONFERENCE:
Please help us spread the word to Montessori parents, teachers and administrators to meet up at The Montessori Collective’s November 5, 2016, annual conference at Chantilly Montessori from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Chantilly Montessori, located near Uptown Charlotte, has ample parking, and is close to many hotels and restaurants. [map it]
Teachers and administrators are encouraged to present topics related to this year’s theme, “Creating Connections.” The Montessori Collective is seeking workshops catering to parents and educators of all ages. Registration fee is waived for presenters.
This event is structured to create connections within our Montessori community. Please encourage your Montessori friends, teachers and administrators to attend this not-to-miss event.  PTOs may also consider sponsoring some of their teachers to attend. This event can be entered into MyTalent for 1 CEU for teachers who wish to take advantage of the PD credits. Be on the lookout for registration details in the future.

HMM has two Spirit Rocks available for painting! If you'd like to paint the Spirit Rock, you must first check to see if the date is available on the Spirit Rock calendar here. If your date is available, then please fill out this form and send in $10 to HMM PTA. Once the money is received, the PTA will reserve the date on the calendar. Can’t wait to see all your beautiful Spirit Rock creations!

Last night, HMM PTA hosted the Spring Spectacular and it was a hit! I sat back and observed the interactions between all the kids. I saw kindness and caring exhibited in many different ways. From the older kids taking care of and including the younger ones both on the dance floor and off, to the respect that they each showed to not only the adults but each other as well. I am so proud of the education that my children are receiving- through curriculum lessons and life lessons as well. Thank you to all- parents, students and PTA- that made this such an enjoyable event for our students!

SLT (Student Leadership Team) Meetings
Join the SLT at their monthly meetings every 3rd Thursday at 8:30 am. The group gets together and discusses student/school decisions that are important to not only the school but our students as well. This is your opportunity to discover what is going on with the school and share concerns.
