ACTION Needed: YES to Secondary Montessori
Wednesday, October 25th, 6pm, Government Center, 600 E. 4th Street
Parents,
The CMS School Board is meeting tomorrow evening to get community feedback on the Magnet program proposals. Part of the proposal is the expansion of the CMS Secondary Montessori program to be housed at JT Williams. We are asking that HMM parents attend, wearing their HMM t-shirts, in support of the secondary Montessori school. It is crucial that we show the school board we are in favor of moving the secondary school to JT Williams. The future of the Montessori program is at stake and the school board needs to see a big turnout from Montessori families.
The meeting is Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 6:00pm in the Government Center: 600 E. Fourth St.
In addition to attending the meeting, we are also sending school board members emails showing our support for the secondary Montessori school at JT Williams. You received their email addresses via the e-bulletin. Please take a moment to email them to voice your support.
If this proposal is not approved we will not have a Montessori high school and who knows how long it will be before we can get a new location proposed. The time is now!! We have amazing parent support and leadership from teachers and the magnet office. We need our own space and we need our dedicated Montessori families to trust the process.
This program will be a stellar program no matter where it is housed because of the leadership and the authenticity of the philosophy that is the foundation of the program. What our kids are getting in Secondary Montessori is not only preparing them for college but more importantly how to be amazing adults. Please join our efforts to get this passed by attending the school board meeting or writing the school board representatives. Whether you choose to have your child attend Secondary Montessori or not, you will be supporting a program that will be good for all CMS students.
Thank you!

Breaking News: Changes Coming for Secondary Montessori
A new location for the Secondary Montessori program will be presented to the school board at its regular meeting on Tuesday, October 11.
At that time, CMS leaders will also recommend the complete expansion of the Montessori program through grade 12, beginning with the addition of 10th grade in the 2017-18 school year. However, the program’s ability to grow is contingent upon the approval for the new location, since the current location at Sedgefield Middle School cannot meet the needs of the program’s growth.
The school board is scheduled to vote on the proposal on Wednesday, November 9.

Sedgefield Named a Magnet School of Distinction
We are honored to announce that Magnet Schools of America named Sedgefield Montessori as a 2016 public “Magnet School of Distinction.” We are one of 258 schools/programs recognized for commitment to high academic standards, school diversity, specialized curricula and instruction, family engagement, and community partnerships. Said MSA Executive Director, Todd Mann, "This is a way for our association to recognize the most accomplished magnet schools in the country. These schools are making a lasting, positive impact on the lives of children. They are preparing them for the challenges of the future by providing them with unique learning experiences that give them the critical skills needed to be workforce and college ready.”
They like us! They really, really like us! Thanks to our entire Montessori community for supporting Sedgefield Montessori and to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for making dreams come true. We are so excited to be expanding our program to 9th grade in 2016-17 and settling into our permanent home in 2017-2018. As soon as CMS determines a definite location, we will let you know!

We need your help - Support our Teachers!
Montessori teachers in the state of NC are having tremendous difficulty getting state licensure. There are teachers at all of the CMS Montessori primary schools (including Highland Mill Montessori) currently facing this issue who may lose their jobs if the state does not change the way they are licensing Montessori teachers. CMS has 4 Montessori schools in Mecklenburg County; these schools all need to be staffed with credentialed Montessori teachers in order to protect to the philosophy. Unfortunately, CMS and the State of North Carolina are not willing to recognize and license Montessori educated teachers to teach in our Montessori schools.
Montessori Association of North Carolina (MANC) has made some progress with the Department of Child Development and Early Education. They plan to present to the dilemma facing these teachers to State Board of Education this dilemma. |
It would be great if we could present a unified front of parents, public Montessori Teachers, and advocacy members to the board. We as a community need to let our State Board of Education know that we value our public Montessori schools and are requesting that they acknowledge and protect our current program.
