Volunteer at HMM

Volunteering at Highland Mill is one of the most rewarding things you can do to help our children obtain a strong education. You'll find so many opportunities throughout the year that will enable you to assist your child's classroom, the PTA and Highland Mill. These opportunities range from very limited one-time commitments to much more extensive ongoing volunteer opportunities. Our goal is to have some level of involvement by all families, recognizing that we all have varying levels of other work and non-work related commitments.

The PTA relies heavily on the time and talents of our families, teachers and staff. Without the help of volunteers, the PTA would not exist! Please consider volunteering so together we can make Highland Mill Montessori the best it can be! Please see below for a description of each of the PTA teams and committees at HMM.

Board Positions & Committee Roles

PTA Board Positions:
President
Vice President
Secretary
Treasurer
3 At-Large positions

Advocacy
Promote programs to further the goals and purposes of the PTA. We educate families and caregivers on important issues related to health and educational success for their children, and seek out opportunities to bring programming and special projects to the school. Among their important work is grant writing for school-wide projects to support our school's goals.

Audit Committee
Responsible for the audits and financial reviews for the PTA. This includes a monthly and yearly review of PTA bank statements and supporting documents.

Communications
A standing committee that communicates all PTA and HMM news, events and activities to families, teachers and staff. This committee creates a weekly E-bulletin, monthly calendar, newsletter, and bulletin board, and updates Facebook with all important information.

Community Liaison
Creates and maintains connections with neighborhood associations and local businesses to create partnerships and a support network for the school, as well as opportunities for students to get involved in the community.

Fundraising Committee
Helps select and set the schedule for the fundraisers throughout the year. Keeps track of progress toward fundraising goals and helps craft communications to families about our work.

Garden/Nature Trail Committee
Work with the teachers and staff to create a plan of action to coordinate the care and maintenance of the gardens. We generally hold a Fall and Spring Gardening Day for our families. This committee is ongoing throughout the year.

Nominating Committee
Works throughout the year to identify talented, motivated, and responsible individuals to serve as officers and committee chairs of the PTA. This involved preparing a slate of nominated individuals to run for elected office of the PTA for the upcoming year and conducting the election at the last PTA General Assembly meeting of the current school year.

Room Parent Liaison
Communicates with and activates Room Parents to work on PTA-led or school-wide efforts to support classes and teachers, as well as giving them content to share with their classroom parents.

Special Events
Work within a committee to plan, coordinate and execute Special Events sponsored by the PTA that are held throughout the year. These events vary year-to-year, but examples include Parent Appreciation events and Family breakfasts. Previously we have also had planning committees specific to our larger events, such as Fall Festival, Book Fair weeks, School Dance, among others.

Spirit Wear
Coordinates the sale of school spirit merchandise throughout the school year. This involves ordering, selling and distributing school t-shirts, car magnets, and other merchandise.

Sustainability
Conceives of sustainable practices throughout the school year at PTA events. Brainstorms and facilitates sustainability events at the school, and implements the Adopt-A-Street program. Oversees and advises on the silverware and nature trail grant programs, as well as future grant opportunities.

Teacher Appreciation Committee
Coordinates and organizes teacher appreciation efforts throughout the year.
