Highland Mill Students Compete at UNCC

Both the JV and Varsity Teams worked very hard this past Saturday at the Science Olympiad competition and it showed! We placed in numerous events and brought home a total of 11 medals! WAY TO GO TEAMS! We are so proud of all the hard work and comradery that was shown!

Marching into Success

Students pose with their favorite books

Highland Mill Montessori hosted several March activities that helped students see themselves in a new light while supporting literacy and academic achievement.

Students could dress as their favorite book character for Read Across America day and in college gear for Career and College Readiness month.

It's never to early to make students aware of their college and career options and the school counseling department headed up several activities for students during this month so they could learn about college and career choices and begin goal setting.

Highland Mill's music teacher smiles with pride as her students perform.

This year's annual holiday production was a Bear-y merry one with a cast of hundreds performing a great selection of musical and dance numbers to entertain the standing room only crowd.

Donuts for Dads

Donuts for Dads annual event gives Highland Mill fathers a chance to have some quality time with their child before school and kids love the chance to serve their dads breakfast and have fun with friends.

The event might be called "Donuts for Dad' but that doesn't mean we won't offer healthy breakfast options as well!

Annual Grandparents Breakfast

Grandparents were welcomed to Highland Mill Montessori at the annual Grandparent Breakfast. Students got to show off their school to their Grandmas and Grandpas as well as make them a gift to keep.

Highland Mill Celebrates Peace Day

Each year, students at Highland Mill join together with children around the world to celebrate International Peace Day. Here are some photos of our whole school celebration.

The benefits of peace education are not just altruistic, but eminently practical – no matter your politics.

Peace is an amazing concept, a useful tool, and, through Montessori education, an attainable goal.

From a very early age, our students learn to think globally about the human race and its place in the entire system of our planet. As they get older and their thinking becomes more abstract, they learn more about the ways that different cultures have coexisted with the geography and biology of their parts of the world to meet the basic needs that all humans have in common.

Once students get to our Adolescent program, they explore questions like, “Are all humans created equal?” and “What brings humans together into groups?”

... these questions are taken very seriously and are never assumed to have simple answers.

"May Peace Prevail on Earth"

Peace is also, essentially, a habit that Montessori students learn.

Lessons in Grace and Courtesy and the Peace Tables we have in every classroom teach our students the habit of viewing and treating others with respect, and then to continue to try to forge understandings where they encounter conflict.
